What is Smart & Skilled?
Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. It's helping people in NSW get the skills they need to find a job and advance their careers.
From 1 January 2015, Smart and Skilled provides eligible students in NSW with:
- an entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III
- government funding for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas.
Am I eligible?
You are eligible for a government subsidised training place if you meet the following criteria:
- Are you 15 years old or over?
- Are you no longer at school?
- Are you living or working in NSW?
- Are you an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen?
If you answered ‘Yes' to all four questions, then you're eligible to enrol in a government-subsidised course with an approved Smart and Skilled training provider.
Types of Qualifications You May Be Eligible For
Your eligibility for a government-subsidised Smart and Skilled course depends on your previous qualifications.
If you haven't completed a Certificate IV or higher-level qualification, you're entitled to enrol in a subsidised course up to Certificate III.
You can also enrol in subsidised training at Certificate IV level, (Certificate IV in New Small Business). Having completed a Certificate IV or higher-level qualification previously does not affect eligibility but may affect the amount of government subsidy offered.
Other Eligibility Conditions
Your eligibility is not affected if you have completed a vocational education and training (VET) course, including a previous qualification through an RTO such as the BEC or TAFE or a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, as part of your high school education.
